The Great Winds
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Sat, 9 Sep 2006 23:29

After a very short rest Rath checked to see where the others were. They were still a little bit behind him, but not much. He decided that he should practice his own magic. There was only one part of air magic he hadn't mastered yet. The Great Winds were the winds that directed everything. They were powerful enough to direct the weather and could control the other winds.

He sent his senses to the skies and went beyond the usual winds he worked with. He struggled with the winds. He felt his senses being ripped apart. He started to gain control of the East wind, and was knocked back by the West one. He tried the South wind next, and was thrown back by the North wind. He couldn't even try to grab another wind before the West one hit him once again and sent his senses back to his body.

Rath's body had taken about as much of a beating as his senses. Covered with scratches and bruises, he was barely conscious and had little strength left. All he remembered was falling out of the tree and hitting the ground. He thought he saw Shena and Fuge, but he wasn't sure.

Falling people

Shena nodded in response to Fuge. Animals? she thought. Can I really communicate with them if I try. It would have to be tested later.

"So how long before you think-" Her question was cut short by a sound up ahead, and a shape falling out of a tree. Her first instinct was to grip her staff and stop walking. But the figure lay unmoving at the foot of the tree...and she recognized it as Rath. Her eyes widened and she ran forward, ignoring the possibility that someone might have done him harm who would also do her harm.

She kneeled by his side, but he still lay prone. He looked like he had been beaten. "What on earth happened to him?" she wondered aloud. She gently rolled him into a position on his back to see him over better.

Rath grabbed his head with one hand and sat up.

"What the hell?"

Rath looked at Shena and then towards Fuge.

"Hey there."

He started laughing for a moment.

"I suppose I shouldn't have tried that up in a tree. Mastering magic is tough work."

He looked at the two of them, and knew they probably thought he was nuts, so he offered an explanation.

"To master air magic you have to gain control of the four great winds. The North, South, East, and West winds to be exact. I just got into a fight with them for control. Almost got two of them, but as you can see, I lost. Sorry to make you worry."

He let out another short laugh.

Fuge walked over and laughed. "I know what that sort of thing is like, you just have to keep trying." He extended his hand to help the man up.

Once Rath was up he turned and asked. "I belive you were asking me a question?"

Disloyalty
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 10 Sep 2006 03:21

Shena got to her feet again, shocked but a little relieved that Rath was up again. She shrugged off her tension. "Yes. Uh...oh, yes. How long do you think it will be before Lord Simon sends someone else after us?" She also wondered what became of Tren...

--

A servant led Tren into the dimly lit room, then moved to stand by the wall until she was needed again. Tren moved into the firelight, and faced the upright figure in the chair. There was one more in the room, to the side of the fireplace, hooded and cloaked in light blue. Long silvery hair hung out from under the hood, but that was all that could be seen.

"You have failed." Lord Simon's voice was quivering with anger. The servant against the wall could not see him, but did not want to. "How?"

Tren spoke plainly. "Her companions are powerful. One...is like her, like her people. The other, I have no idea where he comes from, but his will is great. I was defeated." He hung his head, pretending shame. "I ask your forgiveness."

There was silence for a moment. The figure by the fire made a small movement that Tren could not see with his back turned. Lord Simon saw it though. "I you had been defeated, you would be dead." And he motioned for the servant to leave the room.

As she did, she looked back before she closed the door. The figure had moved from the fire towards Tren, and Lord Simon said quietly, "I cannot forgive disloyalty..." She servant quickly shut the door with a gasp, and sprinted away in terror down the hall.

Fuge pondered the thought for a moment. "I would say as soon as he finished with his first "failure" Only I suspect that this one will attack us with every intention of killing us."

A bit of a mystery
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Thu, 14 Sep 2006 00:32

A small grin appeared on Rath's face.

"Whoever comes had better be ready for one hell of a fight. I could use one."

The way Rath talked about fighting, one would almost wonder what Rath's real intentions were. Is he really good? Is he evil? The real enigma lay in the fact that Rath had no chosen path. He was generally a decent person, but when it came down to it, he really enjoyed fighting, and the kill didn't bother him one bit.

Shena raised an eyebrow at Rath. "Well, right now I would just be glad to be as far away from them as possible." She continued her slow pace, her new sense of the forest around her alert.

She was not sure what would happen if it came down to another fight. She had not done very well a few nights ago when Lord Simon came to finish her. But she had been taken a little by surprise. She was actually not a shabby fighter. And now she had these new abilities...that she sort of wanted to try out. But for all this, she still did not wish for a fight.

Fuge sighed and shook his head. He disliked vilolence unless it was some form of compition his people would participate in. But even then, sometimes it was too much.

"I agree we should get out of here." He wasn't in much of a hurry. They were heading in the direction of his forest......his homeland. He was not ready to return.

They continued travelling for a while as the night continued. This was what Rath found the most annoying. They travelled at night where it was easier for enemies to hide. It wasn't like they couldn't find them quickly. He looked around with his senses and found nothing out of the ordinary.

A meal?
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 17 Sep 2006 18:41

Shena walked beside the two men in silence. She was mostly just in awe at what she was feeling. Never before had she been so connected with Relwen. She felt the winds, the life all around her, heard things that were almost like thoughts...but not as defined. Distant memories...

Her stomach rumbled, and she softly moaned. Upon this harsh reminder she remembered that she had not eaten since before the ritual. Well, she had passed her test, and could stop fasting now. She looked at Fuge. "Can we stop for a meal? Please?"

"Meal?" Suddenly it dawned on Fuge. "Wait, you haven't eaten yet have you...since...oh my of course! My appoligies.

They found a small clearing nearby where Fuge was able to get a fire started. He had already eaten earlyer so he pulled out small bits of jerky for his wolf and himself.

"Do you have food for yourself?"

Berries
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 17 Sep 2006 19:21

Shena sighed as she sat down near a tree, exhausted. "Well...no. But..." she smiled as she had an idea. Placing one hand on the ground, she closed her eyes and focused her sorcery into that spot. When she removed her hand, a small sprout grew out of the ground, soon becoming a dwarf strawberry bush.

It grew until the berries were ripe, and then she picked them off, unable to keep herself from laughing. "That was too convinient." She began to eat, but knew she would need more that berries to keep herself strong.

Just berries? Hopeless...
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 17 Sep 2006 21:15

Rath watched for a moment. Shena was learning. Then he laughed.

"You are hopeless."

He unshouldered one of the bags he had been carrying and opened it.

"If you needed something, you should have said so sooner. Did you forget that I brought back food a couple of days ago?"

He looked through the supply bag, and found dried fruit, bread, cheese, and a couple of other things.

"Next time I leave you two, I'm bringing back a sign to hang from this that says food on it. After all of that work taking care of the bandits, it'd be a shame to waste it all."

Of course Rath knew it was no trouble at all.

Congratulations
by fuge_spazzPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 17 Sep 2006 23:28

Fuge chewed more on his jerky. "Congratulations. You've discovered how to give life. Be carefull tho, whole ecosystems can be distroyed by whatever you do. Make sure it's the right choice first." Fuge nodded and continued chewing on some jerky. The wolf layed lazily by the fire.
