Lenai smiled and kept pacing. Finally, after all these months since the overthrow in the mountains, she would receive help. But first she had to give it.

"Okay" she said. "What I said earlier about how dragons are common back home. Well, they certainly aren't common here, or else Ember wouldn't have to be invisible all the time. You were a little afraid of her at first, right? Well, you haven't yet seen what she is capable of." She was really enjoying herself now. "Imagine the chaos she could cause at the palace."

Lenai returned to her seat. "That chaos would be a distraction for us to find who we were after. Now, can you think of who might have led the rebellion?"

Isaac was surprised, and his face showed it as well. He was getting help? First he had to think about who had led the rebellion.

"I don't know. I saw the leader of the royal guards execute my parents. I'd assume him, but most of the royal guard is on their side, and who knows how much of the military."

Isaac thought for a moment.

"What kind of help would you need from me, to get back what's yours?"

Oh, right, the burns
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 01:26

"Well, by the looks of things, you're a mage. I just assumed that's how you got burned so badly. Mages have a name of fear where I come from, as my people have no distinctive powers besides our ability to tame dragons."

Shena's cheeks grew red as she realized how stupid she had been. "Gosh, I'm sorry. You probably want to rest and recover from those burns. You just lay down here," she yanked him out of his chair and pushed him toward the bed, "and I'll go get some things. I'll be right back." She disappeared out the door.

Ember flew over to the bedpost and looked him in the eye, cocking her head.

Waiting
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 01:35

Isaac sat up on the bed and looked at the dragon for a moment. It seemed content being there. He studied it a little longer and let out a short laugh.

"You're about as much of a mage as I am. I can't even control my own fire."

How could she mistake him for a mage? Well...He had said something about fireballs hurting. Still... He got up and took both great swords off of his back and leaned them against the bed.

"I wonder if she just doesn't pay attention to everything?"

The dragon looked at him funny for a moment and let out another yawn. He sat back down on the bed and waited for her to return. Despite her kindness he still needed to be cautious.

Healing begins
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 01:49

Lenai returned with an armful of bottles, a picked flower, a knife, and a bowl. She scatterd these on the table as Ember flew over to perch on her shoulder. Lenai straighted and her eyes lost focus. She nodded, then returned to her work.

"Yes, in answer to your question, I do pay attention to everything." She smiled while focusing on cutting the leaves of the flower and dropping them in the bowl. She didn't have to look to know he was surprised that she knew. "Ember told me. I have my ways of gathering information." She unscrewed a jar with a brown powder inside of it and tipped some into the bowl. Then she uncorked a bottle of a clear liquid and poured some in.

She proceeded to work like this for several minutes. Soon there was a thick green paste in the bowl, and she carried it to the bedside. "Here" She dipped two fingers into it and gently spread it on a burnt spot on his skin. "I know I said differently earlier, but it would be good for me to know your name."

An introduction.
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 02:01

Isaac let out a short laugh.

"Getting information is one thing, but you don't pay nearly as much attention as you say you do. Once again, I am Isaac. If you want my last name, it's Torain, but that shouldn't matter."

He let out a sigh as she put some of the mixture on his burns.

"I am supposed to be a mage, but I like the sword better. If I could control my magic I wouldn't have fireballs exploding two feet in front of me. At least it took out one of those knights and not me."

not again
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 02:12

Lenai put on the rest of the paste in silence, her face slightly red. She had embarrassed herself again. Why did she always embarrass herself? Why did she always have to act like she was tough and not needing anyone? She hadn't known Isaac for very long and he had already figured out that she wasn't as capable or as smart as she pretended to be.

Lenai put aside the paste when she was done and walked to the window, looking out across the forest toward the mountains. "Do you still want my help? Even though I'm a bit of a fraud?" She asked.

Isaac looked at her for a moment, and was now confused. She was a fraud? What did that mean? Was what she'd said a lie?

"I could use some help, but I'd rather not risk the palace right now. Security is much tighter than it's ever been. My throne can wait. Now. What about your story? Is that a lie, or do you actually need help? It sounded much easier to deal with."

my story?
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 02:29

Lenai turned around. She dropped the carefree act. "No, it wasn't a lie. What I meant by that was that sometimes I act like I know everything. But I don't, no one really does." She sighed.

"But I really do need help, we both do. It is my right to be the leader of the dragon tamers. That is one thing I am actually good at. Ember may not look it now," Ember yawned and stretched, flying to a chair and curling up, "but she was one of the fiercest dragons on the mountain when I met her. And I tamed her. My mother taught me well."

Lenai looked into Isaac's eyes, hoping he understood her. "I am no crook and am not trying to trick you. I only meant that I get carried away sometimes."

Trust
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 02:40

Isaac looked into her eyes for a moment. Her eyes seemed to show hope, and he let out a sigh.

"Fine. I believe you. There's no one else I can really trust right now, anyway."

He couldn't believe it. Maybe he had snapped a while ago, or maybe he'd just lost all common sense. He was trusting a girl he didn't even know very well, and was hoping she could help, but he needed to help her as well.

Isaac stood up and walked over to the window. There were knghts patrolling the streets. Some were going up to buildings even, and would likely search them for him.

"This doesn't look good..."

Stop! Minor Plot Twist! Get That New Character! My Pineapples!
by IsamPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 15:39

"Stop! Thief!" The shrill cry echoes through the streets, piercing the noise of the crowds that surge between the stone walls. "There! That dirty urchin! Someone! My pineapples!"

A sharp-faced shopkeeper points her well-worked finger in the direction of a young and dusty beggar, a dark-skinned child seemingly no more than eleven years old. Upon hearing the woman's cry, he looks up from the apples he was perusing, his eyes widening. Then, his gaze turns to the patrolling knights. In a decision A and B the C of D, the palace guard had taken it upon himself to, when hearing the distressed woman's plea, serve justice. All done up in chainmail and sashes, this steel-encased soldier, bearing down on the urchin, is a certain fright. The boy drops a silver coin, and lunges away. Alas, he is outrun by ringmail-wrapped knight, and hoisted into the air by his ankles. Nothing falls from his pockets, but shouts fall from his lungs.

"I din' take anythin'! I was goin'da buy an’apple!" He cries, kicking and flailing.

The other knights, eager to be seen saving a woman from a thief, join their companion, their search momentarily forgotten.

"Sure ya din't, kid." Says one.
"Han' over the lady's pineapple!" says another.
"I ain't gotta pineapple!" Cries the boy. "Alls I 'ave is- Gosef! My coin! Yer made me drop my silver piece!"
"Ha! Probably a stolen silver piece then aye!" Trumpets yet another knight.
"No, the reds ones, yes." Says Farnis Carson, who only ever got into the knight business because it allowed him to afford the sweets which he loves so much, and is now in the process of purchasing, "And another two of. Oh, is the treacle in this week? Oh. Alright, some of that, too, then..."

"No... Eh, Captain... Tifer's got the urchin' upside down, right, but... nothin' came out. An unless'm wrong... pineapples... They's these big ones, ere... yeh, too big to hide, too spiky to, um, even bother, uh, with...” Declares, rather unsteadily, lieutenant Norngfrey.

Taking appropriate action, the captain commands Tifer to put the orphan down, and, no, on his feet, and a few pears are confiscated from the fruit woman, who’s always had it out for that particular urchin, for bearing false witness, and the guards continue on their way. Unsure of where exactly they stopped, but sure of the penalty for returning late, they skip a few alleys in their haste to make up time.

The urchin dusts himself off, walks back to the apple stand, picks up his silver coin, and slumps against a corner with a newly purchased apple in his hand. Very soon, most of it is in his mouth.

We'd better go
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 19:13

Lenai looked out the window too. Isaac had been right, there were guards patrolling the streets. She let out an angry curse, and darted to the door. "Come on," she said hurriedly,"We need to get away from here." She spoke something to Ember and the little white dragon disappeared again.

She pulled out a gold coin and two silver, leaving them on the table for the room. She walked to the door and held it open. "Get your swords and lets go!" her eyes pleading. She had a bad run in with guards once, and she was not eager for it to happen again.

Isaac silently agreed with her cursing. He was still tired from running, but he knew that if they stayed they'd both be in trouble. He picked up one large sword at a time and put them behind his back where they were easier to carry.

He followed her out the door and down the stairs. When they reached the bottom he noticed out one of the windows a couple of knights were approaching the inn. This time he grabbed her arm and pulled her into the back of the inn where people weren't usually allowed, while the inn keeper was distracted.

"This way."

He led her out back into the kitchen where one of the cooks noticed them.

"Hey! You aren't supposed to be back here."

Isaac pulled out a few gold coins from his pocket and handed them to the cook.

"Keep quiet. We're leaving out the back."

The cook merely nodded and pocketed the gold as Isaac took the lead again and went out the back door.

"Which way should we go next? We can leave through the east gate, and follow the roads, or by the south gate and follow the river. Both are going to be heavily guarded. Unless you want to try to get across the city without getting caught?"

Travels begin
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 20:11

Lenai paused to think. She felt Ember settle invisibly on her shoulder.

Isaac had said he wanted to help her before dealing with his own problems. She wasn't sure that was a good idea, that would give whoever took the throne time to get used to power. She made a quick decision.

"Alright, let's follow the river upstream into the woods. The guards won't go to deep into there. I used it to hide some time ago. Then we can decide what to do and where to go from there? Sound good?"

10 - 3 ...Nice odds
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 31 July 2006 20:34

"Anything is better than getting caught."

They moved quickly through the side streets of the city. They'd taken random corners once in a while to try to keep from following a direct path. It was much easier to avoid the guards that way, although it took them twice as long to get towards the gate.

Once they reached the end of the side streets Isaac looked out towards the south gate. There were at least ten guards waiing at the gate, and now it was the closest exit to the city. Isaac started cursing for a moment and then looked at Lenai.

"I think we'll need to distract them."

He thought for a moment.

"Do you think Ember can do something? You said an invisible dragon could cause a lot of chaos."
