Thieves and a Guardian
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 8 Sep 2008 02:24

When Shena was out of sight from the others, Roric raised a hand to stop them. "Don't bother. Let her be alone."

***

Elsewhere, a pair of thieves had spotted Shena. A single woman in the woods, looks distracted, her friends a distance away, no one else around, all things considered, easy prey. Slowly, one circled in from behind while the other distracted her.

The thief in charge of distraction wandered out of the bushes, half stumbling, and looking around curiously, and then jumped back, as if just noticing Shena for the first time. Plain clothes, and a dagger on his belt, a longsword on his back. He seemed to be an average guy for the most part. "Excuse me ma'am. Do you happen to know where we are? I seem to have gotten lost in the forest."

Quietly the second thief edged up behind Shena, and then, before he could grab her, a faint sound rang through the trees. Thwip. Then behind Shena came a loud thud. The thief, seeing his partner fall, dove at Shena, but before he could take two steps towards her... Thwip. ...he was on the ground too. Both men had holes straight through their hearts. Blood was spilling onto the ground, but there were no arrows in sight. Just holes as if they were made by arrows. Then there was a faint, warm southern breeze around Shena, and then nothing. All was silent, and no one was around.

***

To avoid detection, Rath walked away on the air. Shena's scouting wouldn't work if he wasn't on the ground, and she wasn't about to go into the winds. The Forbidden Arrows were almost perfect. They needed some work though. Those two would have pulled a bit to the right with no air controlling them.

Shena had just settled down on a rock to rest when a man stumbled out of the bushes, looking haggard and lost. She was about to reply that she probably had no more idea where they were than he did, when there was a noise behind her. Things happened too quickly to follow, before suddenly both men were on the ground, dead. she had jumped up in her shock, but now did not know what to do. She was on high alert, her magic wrapping around several useful objects around her in case there were more bandits about, or whoever had killed these two. In her surprise she almost forgot a valuable lesson Rath had taught her. Quickly she knelt and used the earth to feel around her, by now easily forming into a detailed map of the area, showing every single leaf on every single tree. But the only figures were her, the two bodies, and the others by the campfire a ways away. No one else.

Roric popped around the trees a few minutes later. "Tree Girl, you alright? Heard some weird noise from over here." He closed in and saw the bodies on the ground. "What the? What happened?" He whistled and Rahl sped his way over as fast as he could on his wings. "Rahl, get ready to scout the area." The dragon perched on a rock and was about ready to take off at Roric's command.

Shena let her map fall back into the dirt as Roric entered the area. She looked up at him in surprise, and it took her a minute to form words again. "I'm not quite sure," she said slowly, frowning in confusion. She followed his gaze to the bodies. "I didn't do that, something else did. But there aren't any signs of what happened..." The sight of the dead bandits sent a chill through her, simply because of their mysterious death.

She straightened up and forced herself to take a calming sigh. "Well... whomever did it seems to have left, unless Rahl can find anyone. But they don't appear to be a foe."

Roric shook his head. "If he attacked quickly and then vanished quickly, I doubt Rahl could find him." He knelt down and checked the bodies. Holes with now sign of weapons. He went to shift the body and found something was catching the body. He reached out to it, and found a solid object where there appeared to be nothing. As he went to pull it out, the object vanished in his grasp. "Shena." He looked up at Shena. "Rath uses forbidden air magic, right? Do you think he could make arrows out of the air and shoot them?" He studied the body again. It was the only explanation. Someone in the area knew forbidden air magic, and that was most likely Rath. Any other element would have stirred the earth, or would have been noticed by Shena.

Shena looked at Roric, still slightly stunned. "Um... I suppose he could have," she murmured, not wanting to look at the bodies again to find if there was good evidence to support the idea. "But why would he..." She trailed off as her thoughts began to race again, and she wandered off a ways.

A while later Shena looked up to see that Red and Scion had returned to the camp. Red murmured something to Scion before he left, then the redhead slipped something into her pocket that looked like a whistle. She turned around with a smile, but saw the shocked look on Shena's face. She came over, about to ask a question, but Shena simply got up and hugged her friend tightly.

Roric smiled. "Welcome back Red." He watched Shena hug Red and sighed. "Shena was attacked by some thieves, and we're not sure as to who saved her. I have an idea, but no proof."

He went back to the fire and explained the situation to Arynn and Dart. Dart nodded. "Scion added some wood to the fire and left. He seemed to be thinking about something."

Roric sighed. It wasn't Scion anyway. He wondered what actually happened.

Slow progress
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 21 Dec 2008 14:19

Red glanced at Roric and nodded thanks before she looked down at her friend in concern, but Shena soon pulled away, putting on a smile. "I'm fine," she said, answering Red's unspoken question. She did not press the matter, though she could tell something else was still bothering the blonde, they moved back over toward the newly rebuilt fire.

Arynn leaned her head on Dart's shoulder and stared into the fire. "I can't help but think we're making slow progress," she murmured to him. "If we do not reach the coast quickly enough, the demon there will grow too strong for even us."

Roric looked at Arynn and Dart. "Doesn't matter much to me. We can't move any faster than we can, and haste makes waste, or so they say. The longer we take, the tougher Red will be when we get there. Unfortunately, I might have to leave you all when we get to Galtar. I'd like to stay and fight, but I need to see if a friend needs some assistance." He smiled to Arynn. "Sorry to intrude in your conversation like this."

Dart smiled and tightened his arm around Arynn. "It's alright. You seem a bit stressed."

Roric nodded. "Rath's gone, Red's training with Scion, and Shena was attacked by bandits. Trying to sort everything is a bit difficult."

Arynn nodded to Roric, understanding that they were going as fast as they could go... And things certainly were hectic. She simply knew that next time Haelunne returned with a message from the Elven Council, it would not be a pleasant one, and she would not have much to tell in reply.

To get her mind off Rath's disappearance, Shena prompted Red to show her what she had learned that day. Red extended her hand toward a small shadow cast by the fire, and changed it into a simple shape. But she was tired and did not really want to do much else that would be harder, especially because of the early hour that Scion would wake her again.

Roric sighed. "Let's just call it a night. We'll move a bit more tomorrow, and try to fill in the distance we've been losing as we can." He sighed and sat on a rock. Looking out to the horizon, he seemed to be in deep thought.

Dart watched Red for a moment and sighed. "Don't worry Red. Just get some rest."

"Yeah..." Red murmured, dropping her hand and letting the shadows fall back into their naturally flickering shapes. Red came down off the log and lay out on the ground, looking up at the starry sky. Within a minute she was asleep.

With her friend asleep, Shena lay down as well, but could not close her eyes. Sleep would not come to her still.

Dart looked at Arynn and kissed her for a long moment. "Guess we should turn in?" He smiled and looked into her eyes. "Or maybe we can delay that a bit." He tapped her on the nose.

Roric ignored it all and slid off the rock to nod off against it.

While Shena lay awake, a warm breeze in the cool air wrapped around her, and tugged at her arm to follow it.

Odd winds
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 02:09

Arynn grinned and grabbed the finger Dart tapped her with. She shoved him lightly off his seat before laying down next to him, wrapping her arms around him. "I think this is part of the reason we take such a long time to get anywhere," she muttered, but was smiling.

Shena sat up after a moment, realizing she was no longer chilly as usual. The wind was pulling at her arm?? While Dart and Arynn were focused on each other, Shena quietly got up and snuck off into the trees, following the tug on her arms, but keeping herself aware... It could just be an oddly behaving wind, and she might wander into another trap again.

As Shena moved through the trees, the wind faded away, and a light thud came from the ground behind her. "I didn't think you'd get this upset... You alright, Shena?" Rath was standing behind her. He offered a smile, but didn't make any other movements. He wasn't sure what to say or do.
