Taking care of it
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 22:16

Sinat clenched his fists around the end of the arms of his chair, causing the wood to creak. "I'm taking care of it. And as for those rumors, if you hear anyone speaking them, you tell them to shove it." He struggled to regain his temper, and he sat back in his chair and seemed to relax, but only slightly. He sighed raggedly. "I don't care what those rumors say. The situation is being handled. Today I ordered the city guards to increase the reward to four hundred gold coins." He grinned. "That'll bring her in."

Smells of cooked meats and stews and seasonings began to waft through the halls. But there was still a while before the feast started. He looked at Uther. "I hope you are enjoying the wine...finest in my estate. So tell me, what is this I hear of a special squad that you are training? It interests me."

Way out
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 00:09

Natashi worked her way through bushes, getting slapped in the face numerous times with twigs, and by the time she stopped she had several scratches all over her. She sighed, she was too old for this, and not as fit as she used to be. Checking to make sure the coast was clear, she darted from the bushes and ran along the outer wall of the lord's estate.

Finally another gate came in sight. She hid behind a tree and surveyed the scene. There was a guard in a small hut by the gate, but he seemed preoccupied with something he was reading. Natashi thought maybe she could walk past without him looking up, so she stepped out and tried to act casual as she walked down the path.

"Hey, what are you doing in here?" a harsh voice made her heart freeze, and she stopped in her steps, turning around. "What?" she said nervously.

A guard had come from around a hedge and jogged up to her with a cross look on his face. "You peasants think you can just walk in here and try to talk to the lord without a summons...get out now, or I'll escort you out."

Natashi put up her hands and managed a smile. "No no, I'm going, sorry to cause you trouble." She turned and walked briskly to the gate, then once out of sight she broke into a run down the nearest alley.

The guard who had stopped her walked up to the guard in the hut, and rested his elbow on the window sill, scratching his head. "You see that woman?"

"Nu-uh," said the man still looking at his book. The other guard bit his lip. "There was somethin' funny about her. Didn't look like she was from around here." He shrugged, and seeing the other guard wasn't going to engage him in conversation, he walked back up toward the buildings.

RE: Special Training
by LemonPM MemberMember Profile on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 12:41

Aron looked at the weapon in his hand and bent it to test its flexibility. He had seen his father use a spear, just once. It has much more thrusts than when using the quarterstaff. He tried mimicking his father once, it didn't work out too well, a staff is much too stiff.

Aron thought back to the time he had seen his father use that spear. He seemed to remember every thrust and swing of it. Then he gripped the weapon and started swinging. It didn't feel right, the weapon he's holding has two heads, but a spear has only one. He stopped and looked around, then dropped the weapon. Everyone seems to be staring at him since he had signed up for the army. Aron stepped away from the weapon.

Uther shrugged. "She's your slave. As long as it does not hurt the reputation of the House of Lords, do as you will."

The lord stood up. "In order to defeat enemies abroad, one must first defeat enemies within - that's what Byr said. I trust him. There are still many in the House of Lords who disagree with our plans," he stopped and sneered. "Have you not noticed that there are less lords in the House recently? How do you think they ratified my recruitment of an army this large?"

Not that hard
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 22:19

Scion rolled his eyes. "Boy. You can't even recognize a variant of your own weapon?" He picked up the voulge and held it like one would hold a staff. He used it like a staff as well and turned it while he moved to make effective use of the blades. When he stopped he shoved it back into the boy's hands. "Take it and try again. It's like a staff. The blades give it a new appearance, but it's still the same weapon."

Scion looked at the other soldiers. "Start practicing!" He paced back and forth watching them all swing their various weapons. The younger soldiers had some trouble adjusting to the training and the new weapons, but he knew he could get them ready in time.

Not for war
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 22:41

Sinat allowed himself a small smile. "I didn't know, actually. I just assumed you used some favors," he said quietly, "perhaps monetary, to bring some of the lords over to your side."

Sinat looked out the window. "You know Uther, I was against it myself." He was silent for a while, then looked back at the lord. "But once I realized I was of a minority of lords in the New Hanwen House who opposed the war, I agreed to contribute. I've gathered men, not nearly as much as you have, mind you, but I'm beginning to think that this might be possible." He looked at his fingers. "Perhaps your Byr is right. Perhpas the Valley can be taken, in its instability and no stable leader." The sun headed toward the horizon, and the feast would start as soon as it set.

Aron picked up the weapon and tried following the trainer's tips. It worked out...great! Changing from one stance to another, his movements flowed as if in a dance. However, he feels that there is something missing, as if he is not fully exhibiting the use of the weapon. He looked at the blades again. It may be similar to a staff, but these two blades at the end surely makes it different. Aron stood up and tried again, this time adding some short slashes here, and making a few more twirls there, then he stopped, thought, and made a few more adjustments.

---

Aron sat down on the training ground, sweating with fatigue. He had made more improvements in using the weapon than he'd thought. Looking around, he saw that he had been so absorbed with the weapon that he missed the trainer's call for rest. Aron quickly picked up his spear and ran toward the rest of the soldiers.

Not just the Valley
by LemonPM MemberMember Profile on Sat, 28 Apr 2007 10:09

"Not just the Valley, if we're lucky, Anon will also be ours," the lord laughed. "Think of the glory, Sinat, think of the GLORY!"

Then the great lord left the room.

Scion looked at the soon to be squad commanders. "Looks like you all can use a weapon. Tomorrow practice will be longer. The Lords want a feast and to my misfortune, I have to go. Same time tomorrow will be fine. We'll start with some sparring."

Scion walked out of the training barracks and out into the streets. He drew his gray cloak about him as the chill wind swept through the area. He hadn't worked himself to a sweat, so he figured he'd go to the feast as is. The sun was mostly behind the trees now. The damn war wouldn't start soon enough.

Arriving guests
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 29 Apr 2007 12:35

Sinat watched Uther's back as he walked away, scorning a bit. Sure, Lord Sinat was not one to turn away the opportunity of glory, but he thought that perhaps the House of Lords had rushed into this a bit. Plus, if they were smart, they would overrun the Valley before they tried to betray Anon. Sinat stood and walked to his wing of the mansion, brooding over the fact that they were about to go to war, just when he had lost what might be his greatest weapon...

An hour later the entrance hall was filled with people, talking and laughing and moving into the main halls, then back out into the open air behind the mansion. Most of them were soldiers and their women. Some were just important people in Hanwen, and of course, most were wealthy.

Lord Sinat greated each guest as they came in, with a small smile that was rarely sincere. He did not know most names, but those he did he pronounced with a bit of disdain in his voice.

The Assassin
by LemonPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 29 Apr 2007 18:26

Though the inn is not Anon's top, the room Byr was in is certainly fitting for the great lord of Anon himself. Rich carpet imported from the East covered the floor, silk blinds by the windows, and the furnitures themselves are worth more than several hundred gold crowns each. However, Byr found no comfort in the room's richness.

He was thinking about how he should deal with the Great Lord Naman. No matter how he tried to persuade him, the lord always put him off with those five words: "I will think on it." Byr went to the palace again today, and this time, it was no different. At this rate, the lord is going to ruin his plans. He must think of a way to make the lord submit.

Byr tilted his head, he smelled something, a human. Then, there was a knock on his doors.

---

A man was clinging on the walls outside the ambassador's window. He was dressed all in black, a poisoned dagger at his belt, and a row of throwing knives across his chest. The servant had just left the ambassador's room and the guards are changing shifts, now is the best time to strike. The man in black pulled a thin reed out of his pocket and blew smoke into the room. The ambassador swayed, then collapsed.

The man kicked open the window and jumped into the room. He walked over to the unconscious ambassador and flipped him over, the dagger in one hand, and a smile on the other. Suddenly, the ambassador's eyes flew open.

"Surprise!" the ambassador said as the man's eyes opened with surprise.

Tamer in Anon
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:29

Natashi was even more withdrawn that usual, and Master Yijan noticed something was wrong. While his children were playing upstairs, he walked into the kitchen where she was washing dishes, and sat down at the table behind her. She became very uncomfortable at his silence, and finally she put down her dish with a clatter and turned to him. "What?"

He raised his eyebrow. "You know, I went to the palace today." Natashi stiffened. "I was there to tend to some of Lord Naman's horses, and I overheard one of the guards telling a story about some woman who had snuck in. He said she looked foreign." They watched each other's faces.

Finally Natashi gave in. "It was me, my lord."

Master Yijan smiled. "Good, I was hoping you wouldn't lie to me." She did not speak, but looked at the ground. For the first time, Yijan noticed a bit of a grey streak in the old tamer's hair. He got up and walked over to her, holding her chin in his hand so she would look at him. "I know you are concerned about the war. And I get the feeling that you weren't just a regular Tamer in your time. But you can't go sneaking around the palace like that." His voice dropped. "If it were discovered that there was a Tamer in Anon, with a war on the way, they would probably take you as a prisoner, or worse. And I don't want that happening to you. Alright?" Natashi nodded. Yijan had always been kind to her, and she did not want to disobey him...though she might.

Avoiding the crowds
by DartPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:45

Scion had gone to the feast, but had found he wasn't in a very festive mood (not that he ever was). He stood against a wall trying to remain hidden. His gray eyes were lowered to the floor as he tried to avoid eye contact with everyone. He hated crowds, and avoided them when necessary. He wasn't good with people anymore, and simply hated life, his own most of all.

Every shadow seemed to watch him, but none looked directly at him. Another day in this life. The darkness behind the gray eyes welled up into something far deeper than normal understanding as he stood there.

An Experiment
by LemonPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:52

Byr sat on his bed, looking at his catch. The assassin is tied up in a corner of the room, fear vivid on his face. Beside the man, two beings of great stature stood guard. At first look, these beings looked like simple humans, but a closer look revealed them to be much more. Each of them stood at least 8 ft tall, a pair of horns stood out from their heads, and sharp canine tooth protruded out of their mouths. They are dressed in simple leather garments. One of the beings looked at the assassin and licked his lips. The man trembled.

"He's not for eating, Ysir," Byr said, then he smiled at the captive. "They were humans once, just like you. Now they're much better don't you think?"

"W-w-what did you d-do to them?"

Byr laughed. "You're starting to sound like my host! The horrendous pressure of my presence in his body made him sound just like you when he was able to gain control in those rare circumstances."

"What did you do to them!" the assassin shouted, fear quickly turning into anger.

Byr raised his eyebrows. "That temper won't do, now, will it?"

The creature on the man's left kicked him onto the floor, knocking the breath out of him.

"Not so hard, Ysan." Byr frowned.

"The man is weak, lord Baxyierax," the creature replied. "Why are we keeping him alive anyways?"

"That is not your place to ask, Ysan. I intend to use him for my...experiment..."

Anti-social?
by Shadow and LightPM MemberMember Profile on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 23:46

Lord Sinat moved around constantly, and he appeared to be pleased. The feast had turned out to be very well prepared. The food was plentiful and delicious. As he passed the kitchen master, he nodded and gave him a fleeting smile, and the kitchen master nearly fainted with relief. Sinat moved on, stopping to talk briefly with those of high standing in the city. Part way through the evening, a soldier standing off in the corner caught his eye. He was not speaking to anyone. Sinat moved over.

"Good evening," he offered the man a smile. "I am Lord Sinat of the House of Lords. Might I know your name? Would you join me in a glass of wine?"
