Old Sins Cast Long Shadows
by Seniel LisosPM MemberMember Profile on Sun, 6 Dec 2009 13:57

A faint drizzle turned the morning gray, falling in through the hole in the roof of the room Seniel had made her home. It rained rather a lot in Icelyn, the little village of half stone, half timbered houses was away from anything even vaguely resembling civilization. The ruined stone tower stood on a rocky crag overlooking her adopted home, connected to a ruined wall that surrounded the village and farmland. A river curled around the west side, and the rest was woods except a narrow track running through them.

Seniel's room was circular, a gap in the ceiling and a huge hole in the walll. She'd taken an old, threadbare tapestry and pulled it across the gap to at least give herself some privacy. The cold still seeped in.

The deva huddled in her nest of old tapestries and warm wool blankets given by thankful villagers, her greatsword Asrias and ancient, war-worn armor laying just out of reach. There was some cold food on the low, rickety table, left over from the dinner the villagers had left out on the rocks below the tower for her. No one went in the tower. It was sacred space, as far as they were concerned.

Seniel had been here for five hundred years, out living even the few elven rangers that had settled in the village. She was a guardian force that appeared when called upon, whether it was for a sick child or an army of orcs. She was happy to help. The humans, while wary, had been kind. They were the ones who had bandaged her wounds and cared for her when she first came here.

Mikael climbed the rocky crag, soaked already from the rain and frustrated. He stood in front of the Old stone tower and looked up. "Piece of run down garbage if you ask me." He said to himself with a shrug. But he had heard there was something precious in the tower. Something the villagers of this town coveted. "Then why keep it here?" He mumbled to himself as he entered the tower. He was in a foul mood because of the rain, but the thought of the villages precious something soon to be in his hands kept him going.

Seniel felt some of her wards disturbed. The celestiel picked herself up, limping a little from the wound to her leg from an orcish spear. It had been a big war band, too much for the village militia she'd trained to handle alone. She started buckling on her armor painfully. It was old and battered, but it had been a gift forged by Moradin himself, so it would never fail on her. Supernal script covered it, weaving together into interlocking patterns.

She picked up her greatsword hesitantly. Doing harm to anyone was something she always tried to avoid. But perhaps she could frighten them away. Asrias whispered comfortingly, the sword just as much a part of her as the armor.

Vladimir Gray was thinking the same thing.
An interesting place to keep such a pitiful being. He thought with a wry smile.
He looked up to the sky, rain pouring on his face. He lifted his arms slightly, enjoying the wash while he could. It was so cool. Refreashing...
Something that he rarely experianced.
His dark brown hair soaked, and the rain slid off his black long trench coat. It was a good night to hunt.
He glanced up to the tower and swiftly headed for it.

Mikael crept quietly into the tower. He looked around searching. "Come on... come on." He said shaking himself to get a bit more dry.

Seniel crept down the stairs, her wings furled and greatsword at the ready. She pressed herself behind one of the two great stone gargoyles that guarded the crumbling stair, putting her mouth to the tube that would amplify and distort her voice so that it sounded grinding like stone--like an earth elemental's.

"Who dares set foot in this place?" the gargoyle seemed to roar.

"It is I! Vladimir Gray!" he annouced, drawing his blood red sword and walking into the tower. Black shadowy wings seemed to grow from his cloak. They were webbed like a bats. "I have come for your angel." He slowly walked up the steps of the tower.

Mikael turned at the voice. "What the?" He had drawn out his duel swords. This was all getting a bit strange for him.

"Go away!" This time the call was in Seniel's voice. She kept to her hiding place, greatsword at the ready. Her leg throbbed, the wound untended. I can't fight another battle alone...not against a devil. She could sense his infernal taint from here. And there was a mortal here as well...she couldn't let them be harmed in the crossfire. Maybe she was one of the Fallen, but she wasn't evil.

Vladimir whistled. "Seniel, you know we cannot keep this up much longer!" He continued to ascend. "Finished your descent! Come with me!"

Mikael tilted his head at the dark man that had entered the tower. He followed, far enough behind him so that he wouldn't be in too much danger. But he was there for a reason and he wasn't leaving without what he came for.

"Leave me in peace!" Seniel shouted. "You don't understand! I'm not like the rest of you!" The tower was so crumbling that she had space for it... The deva leaped as best she could with her wounded leg, one flap of her wings carrying her over Vladimir's head. She tried to land, but her leg gave way and she collapsed right in front of Mikael, greatsword landing just barely within reach. The wound in her leg tore open again, bright red blood splashing down to the floor as she tried to pick herself up, wings furling.

Vladimir whirled around and shealthed his sword. He walked slowly up to her and offered a hand. "Your time is up, Seniel." he said softly. "Do not keep up this chase."

Seniel grabbed her greatsword, forcing herself to stand without aid. She leveled it at him. "I will never be like you! Leave me alone!"

Mikael stood open mouthed. "Hey, what's your deal?" He asked, kneeling down to check on the wounded woman. She was bleeding rather a lot.
