Lief smiled. "Don't you know the story? If the hermit succeeds on their path, they meet the wheel of fortune. After that, they can find the scales of justice and work on the path to balancing their inner-selves."

Rhian smirked. "Not that story." He looked at Sabal. "He's referring to the tale of life along the tarot something or others."

Lief shook his head. "The twenty two major arcana are all steps in life from the zero point of the fool to the twenty first of the world." He gave Rhian a smile and yawned before resting against his horse's neck and going back to his scouting.

"You mean there's a story that goes with those cards too?" Sabal said a bit incredulously. The surface was a strange place indeed. "How odd."

Rhian shrugged. "I guess. I never got it myself."

Lief smiled, and decided to explain it in as simple of an explanation as possible. "There are Twenty two major arcana, and fifty six minor arcana. The minor arcana are divided into four suits associated with an element, a cardinal direction, and have a general theme. The major arcana are separate from the suits, but each one represents a particular phase of a journey in life. All journeys start with us all as the fool. We are zero, and nothing. Each step along the path is a new phase of enlightenment about life until we either fail, or find our way to the world arcana where we understand everything and nothing. Each arcana after the fool is a part of the fool's journey. With the major and minor arcana, I can divine the future from these cards. It's not as clear as using the sight, but it's far more accurate than looking far into the future where choices cloud everything."

"I think I'll be staying with my own schools of magic. They are much...simpler," Sabal said with a wry smile, stretching and shifting in the saddle. "And more complicated, each in their own way. Divination is clearly not for me. I have never understood cards."

Lief chuckled. "Cards are interesting. The stories are fascinating once you know them and how they pertain to life. "

Rhian laughed. "It's good Lief. Just leave it alone. We'll never grasp the finer arts of divination."

Lief gave a mock frown, and then went back to watching the roads.

"I'll take your word for it," Sabal said lightly, looking out at the horizon. The sun had finally risen all the way above the hills. "Honestly, though, you surface dwellers are very strange with your divining cards and bones. But I suppose it makes sense, without priests to beg for answers from an uncaring deity."

Rhian tried to relax in the saddle. "I think it's a little different for Lief, but that's why a lot of people take that path. Lief, like everyone else, has his secrets. That's what the Lost Blades are after all. A pile of secrets."

"Agreed," Sabal said with a nod. "But we are all entitled to our privacy. Often for the good of others."

Rhian nodded. "As long as that privacy doesn't turn around and bite us on the asses later."

"I doubt it," Sabal said with a laugh. "As long as it's not taken too far, that is."
